Twitter & Facebook Down? I Smell A Rat. Was it an attack?

Twitter has been down this morning for about 30 minutes (so far). It still isn’t back up. Strangely it appears Facebook is having problems as well. A coincidence? I doubt it. I smell an attack. Does anyone have any information?
Update: According to CNN, twitter was indeed attacked. They were down for hours. Facebook was also attacked, but they seemed more prepared for it.
