Facebook Now Has Over 300,000,000 Users Worldwide Waiting For Your Ads

September 16, 2009 by Mike · 2 Comments

Facebook was created about 5 years ago from a dorm room at Harvard University. Since then it has been announced they have over 300 millions users. The greatest news is they are finally breaking even in operating costs.

Many people wonder how Facebook makes money when it doesn’t cost us 1 dime to create a Facebook Account. The answer is easy, advertising! Every single page you view on Facebook has advertising on the right column. Whenever you click that ad, the advertiser pays Facebook a “click fee”. This could be anywhere from pennies to dollars, depending on who else wants to advertise. Think of it as an auction.

The difference between advertising on Facebook versus Google, Yahoo and Bing is simple. You can set your target. I can tell Facebook that I only want my ads to show to women between the ages of 35 and 55. I can even go a step further and request a minimum educational background.

So if I was selling women’s perfume my ideal target could be a female over the age of 20 something? During holidays like Christmas & Valentines Day I would advertise to the men as well in hopes they would purchase for a gift.

If you have teenagers who use Facebook check out the advertising they see next time they are logged on. It’s all aimed to kids in their age bracket.

Besides age and sex targets you can set a radius if you are a local business. Let’s say I have a take out Chinese Restaurant. I could have an add run for a couple hours before dinner every night to any user between the ages of 18 and 100. I just simply set a radius of 8 miles or so.

Let’s face it folks, Facebook is hear to stay. If you’re looking for a new way of advertising this could be your answer. Just take 50 bucks or so and play around. Many businesses aren’t aware of this hug marketing potential.

  1. Doug says:

the marketing potential is vastly overstated, Facebook is not adressing the problem of fake/duplicate accounts. It is my opinion that this 300,000,000 is a false statistic that has been intentionally allowed by Facebook to boost advertising gains.

I agree with your argument Doug, but how many adults do you know that don’t have a Facebook account. The ones that don’t are being converted by the ones that do have an account (usually family).
According to the 2007 US Census bureau, there are 111,162,259 households in the United States alone. If you do the math that number is feasible.
