account, even if you don’t plan on using it right away. Why? When you sign up for Twitter the first thing they will ask you is what username do you want to use. The name of my company is PAWS Printing, so my Twitter url is http://www.twitter.com/pawsprinting. I was lucky enough to get that name before someone else took it on me.
Twitter allows for multiple accounts, but you must have a different email address for each account. My hosting company allows 1,000 different email addresses for each of my domains (I have 3). If I wanted to, I could have a whole bunch of Twitter accounts. The shady people will use up all of the good Twitter names, and you’ll get stuck with something less desirable. You know how hard it is to get a good domain name? The same will apply with Twitter.
On the Showroom Logic side of my business, we sign used car dealers up with Twitter ourselves. We then set it up with automatic updates, get them a few followers and turn all of the log-in information over to them.
Here are some simple directions to sign up:
- Go To Twitter.com and create your free account.
- Choose your username and pray that it’s not already taken.
- Be sure to fill in your Bio and the town/city you are in. This will help the local Twitterers find you.
- Find somebody on Twitter that is related to your business. This could be vendors or even your competition. Find out who they are following through their Twitter page and start following other people.
- Currently, Twitter is so new we basically do a “You follow me, I’ll follow you”. This is why it’s important to get out there now. It takes time to get followers, so just let nature take it’s course.
- If you have a blog, you should have an RSS feed. You can easily go to Twitterfeed.com and set up your account so every time you make a blog post it will automatically send out a Tweet (usually within about 30 minutes).
That’s it. You are now on Twitter. But listen…..first consider a few things. here is what not to do:
- Do not over tweet. If you are a business nobody wants to know where you are eating lunch. Only tweet when you have something to say. If you send out too many tweets you will lose your followers.
- Even if you only tweet once every couple of days that will be fine.
- On the other hand, don’t under tweet. All of your tweets have a time and date stamp. If I see that your last post was 5 months ago it will be clear to me that you abandoned your account.
