Irish Gangster Whitey Bulger Story Would Topple Goodfellas
I have never been much of a reader, but for some reason I love a good non-fiction crime story. Especially Organized Crime biographies about Sammy the Bull or John Gotti. I also love great crime dramas (who doesn’t) like Goodfellas. I think one of the greatest crime stories is still being written with a long time fugitive on the run and an FBI Agent behind bars.
If I was to write the screenplay I would get my “facts” from two books. The first one that I read in 1992 was called Valhalla’s Wake: The IRA, M16, and the Assassination of a Young American. If I remember correctly the book was co-written by the sister of John McIntyre. The other book I read about 8 years later was called Black Mass. This book was written by a couple of Boston Globe Reporters named Dick Lehr and Gerard O’neill. The proper ending of the first book should have been in the second book written years later, but stand-up gangsters hadn’t revealed the whereabouts of a few bodies buried along side busy I-93 in Dorchester, Massachusetts.
Now obviously I won’t blog about the two books, but I just wonder where Hollywood has been? (No-The Departed had nothing on this) This is a great story. Here are the characters:
James “Whitey” Bulger: South Boston Irish Crime Boss. Brother of Massachusetts State Senate President William Bulger. This man ran South Boston for decades and was feared by many. He is still on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted List.
Steven “The Rifleman” Flemmi: Italian sidekick of Whitey Bulgers. Pleaded Guilty to 10 murders and is currently serving life in prison. The FBI says he killed “like a serial killer”.
John Connelly: Former FBI Agent. Grew up in the same South Boston neighborhood as Whitey Bulger. Now serving time in a Federal Prison for racketeering and obstruction of justice convictions stemming from his relationships with the above mentioned. On November 6th, 2008 John Connelly was found guilty of second degree murder in Miami Florida for his role in helping gangsters murder an accountant in South Florida back n 1982. On Thursday January 15th, 2009 he was sentenced to an additional 40 years in prison. He is now 68 years old. The judge pretty much made it clear that the statute of limitations made the sentence illegal, but sentenced him anyway. It is expected that his conviction will be vacated.
Kevin Weeks: Stand up South Boston Tough Guy. Rose up in the ranks quickly after Whitey saw him fist fighting in his bar. Years later felt betrayed by Whitey & Flemmi for being FBI Rats for decades.
John McIntyre: Ira Gun Smuggler piloted a boat loaded with weapons from Gloucester Massachusetts across the sea to Ireland. Kevin Weeks led police to his buried body many years later after both books were written.
Sorry I don’t have a photo of John McIntyre because Boston’s Biggest Whiner Howie Carr has his watermarks all over them. This guy is a whole other story and I’m really surprised he hasn’t been murdered yet.
