Irish Gangster Whitey Bulger Story Would Topple Goodfellas

Whitey Bulger The Movie

I have never been much of a reader, but for some reason I love a good non-fiction crime story. Especially Organized Crime biographies about Sammy the Bull or John Gotti. I also love great crime dramas (who doesn’t) like Goodfellas. I think one of the greatest crime stories is still being written with a long time fugitive on the run and an FBI Agent behind bars.

If I was to write the screenplay I would get my “facts” from two books. The first one that I read in 1992 was called Valhalla’s Wake: The IRA, M16, and the Assassination of a Young American. If I remember correctly the book was co-written by the sister of John McIntyre. The other book I read about 8 years later was called Black Mass. This book was written by a couple of Boston Globe Reporters named Dick Lehr and Gerard O’neill. The proper ending of the first book should have been in the second book written years later, but stand-up gangsters hadn’t revealed the whereabouts of a few bodies buried along side busy I-93 in Dorchester, Massachusetts.

Two Great Books

Now obviously I won’t blog about the two books, but I just wonder where Hollywood has been? (No-The Departed had nothing on this) This is a great story. Here are the characters:

James “Whitey” Bulger: South Boston Irish Crime Boss. Brother of Massachusetts State Senate President William Bulger. This man ran South Boston for decades and was feared by many. He is still on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted List.

Steven “The Rifleman” Flemmi: Italian sidekick of Whitey Bulgers. Pleaded Guilty to 10 murders and is currently serving life in prison. The FBI says he killed “like a serial killer”.

John Connelly: Former FBI Agent. Grew up in the same South Boston neighborhood as Whitey Bulger. Now serving time in a Federal Prison for racketeering and obstruction of justice convictions stemming from his relationships with the above mentioned. On November 6th, 2008 John Connelly was found guilty of second degree murder in Miami Florida for his role in helping gangsters murder an accountant in South Florida back n 1982. On Thursday January 15th, 2009 he was sentenced to an additional 40 years in prison. He is now 68 years old. The judge pretty much made it clear that the statute of limitations made the sentence illegal, but sentenced him anyway. It is expected that his conviction will be vacated.

Kevin Weeks: Stand up South Boston Tough Guy. Rose up in the ranks quickly after Whitey saw him fist fighting in his bar. Years later felt betrayed by Whitey & Flemmi for being FBI Rats for decades.

John McIntyre: Ira Gun Smuggler piloted a boat loaded with weapons from Gloucester Massachusetts across the sea to Ireland. Kevin Weeks led police to his buried body many years later after both books were written.

Sorry I don’t have a photo of John McIntyre because Boston’s Biggest Whiner Howie Carr has his watermarks all over them. This guy is a whole other story and I’m really surprised he hasn’t been murdered yet.

Srugrena Burial Grounds in Ireland – Not In Google? OMG!

Does anyone know anything about this place? It’s located in County Kerry, Ireland. There is nothing on the internet about it. Isn’t it odd to not find something on Google these days?

Ghost In Ireland In The Grounds Of A Mansion

September 4th, 2008 Mike No comments

I forget the name of this mansion, it’s somewhere in County Kerry. When I was in Ireland in February 2008 I took hundreds of photos. My mother took this picture of me standing in the grounds, if you look to the right, doesn’t it look like someone is there? My mom took that photo, and the only other person with us was her friend Noreen.

Look To The Right? Doesn't it look like a kid without a torso?

Worlds Smallest Bathroom In Killarney

September 2nd, 2008 Tracey No comments

I’m pretty sure this was in Killarney, but I’m not totally sure. The photo doesn’t do much justice, but you can see the door jamb. I was shocked when I first opened the door (expecting to walk into a bath “room”).

Ballymalis Castle In County Kerry, Ireland – Ferris Castle

August 31st, 2008 Tracey No comments

This was a cool kind of hidden castle in County Kerry that my mom and her friend Noreen took me to. The locals call it the Ferris Castle but it’s known as Ballymallis Castle. I’m not even sure if anyone knows when it was built, but obviously it was a long time ago. The fact that it still stands tell a lot about the pride and craftsmanship of the Irish.

Here are Some Great Photos:
